Sofa care · Coffee spills
A flat white on the lounge is lovely until some lands on the seat. Before choosing a cleaner, identify the wet piece, its care instructions and what was in the drink.
Work through the spill in that order. You can make a useful start without guessing a cleaning mixture or treating a loose cover and the sofa underneath as the same material.
Start with the liquid you can still absorb
Put the mug somewhere steady. Use a clean, dry absorbent cloth on the surface coffee, lifting it gently and moving to a dry section as it becomes wet. Keep the contact light rather than pushing the drink through the cushion. Lavazza’s sofa-specific guidance starts with absorbing excess coffee and avoiding rubbing. Lavazza Australia
Leave cleaning bottles aside while you do this. If an added loose cover is wet, lift the affected area carefully when you can do so without dragging the spill over a clean seat. Look at the upholstery below and note whether it also needs attention. Leave a fixed casing in place.
A spill beside piping or a gap deserves a wider look than a mark in the centre of a seat. Note whether liquid ran towards the join, the arm or the cushion edge. This helps you identify what needs care instead of repeatedly working on the most obvious brown patch.

Separate a wet spill, a dried mark and an earlier cleaning attempt
These are three different starting records, not three strengths of cleaner. For wet coffee, you have liquid to take up. For a dry mark, take a clear photo before changing its appearance. If you have already applied something, write down what it was before adding another product.
| What to record | Details worth keeping |
|---|---|
| Current condition | Wet surface, dry mark, or previously treated area; note when you first noticed it. |
| The drink | Black coffee, milk or plant drink; sugar, syrup, cream or chocolate if known. |
| Affected pieces | Added cover, original casing, seam, arm or cushion interior; mark anything you cannot inspect as unknown. |
| Treatment so far | Water, cleaner name, amount if known, rubbing, washing or heat already used. |
On a phone, swipe the table to read both columns.
A long black and a sweet iced coffee are useful descriptions to give the maker or cleaner. They are not permission to select a different chemical yourself. If somebody else made the drink, record what you know and leave the rest unknown; guessing an ingredient does not improve the care decision.

Match the instructions to the piece that is marked
Find the sofa’s model and fabric information, then identify any separate cover. A care label on a throw belongs to that throw. It does not establish how to clean the upholstery, zip casing, lining or filling underneath it.
Warwick’s Care Label 3 applies to specified non-pile fabrics. It keeps zipped cushion covers in place for cleaning and prohibits dishwashing or laundry detergent and wetting the filling. These directions belong to that label. Warwick Fabrics
If you cannot tell which label belongs to the wet piece, photograph both the label and the whole cushion. Read our guide to sofa-cover care labels and cleaning codes before interpreting a letter or symbol as washing permission.
For a removable cover with an expressly permitted washing method, follow all its washing and drying instructions. Keep its care record separate from the sofa’s. If the underside or cushion interior is wet, include that fact in the enquiry rather than washing only the visible face and assuming the whole cushion is dealt with.

Choose one complete treatment method
KING’s fabric-care guide calls for cleaners designed for the fabric, following their directions without vigorous rubbing or soaking. Its kit instructions belong to the KING materials and products described; they do not establish compatibility with another sofa. KING
Before starting, set out the complete method you have permission to use. Record the product or solution, where it is applied, how residue is removed and how the item dries. Follow any required concealed-area test in those instructions before proceeding to the visible patch. Keep the cleaner packaging available so you can check the directions as you work.
Check that you can carry out the finish as well as the first application. A method that requires residue removal across a whole panel is a different job from dabbing one corner. If the procedure, access or drying arrangements do not suit the furniture, ask about an appropriate alternative before starting halfway through it.
For broader routine care, our guide to cleaning a couch without a machine covers the surrounding upholstery-care decisions. The purpose here is to choose a coffee treatment that belongs to the stained fabric.

A worked example for identified Sunbrella indoor upholstery
This example applies only when the fabric is identified as Sunbrella and the furniture maker confirms the relevant method. Sunbrella’s coffee chart lists 4 mL of dishwashing liquid per 250 mL of water, or its named fabric cleaner. These are the chart’s metric quantities, not an Australian teaspoon conversion. Sunbrella
- Confirm the indoor method and furniture construction.
- Lightly mist; gently work seam to seam with a sponge or very soft brush. Avoid scrubbing.
- Rinse all soap from the fabric, then blot with a clean soft towel or sponge.
- Blot or wet-vacuum remaining water across the panel. Air dry; rinse and blot again until residue is gone.
Read Sunbrella’s full indoor method first; it cannot authorise cleaning unidentified upholstery. Sunbrella
Warwick’s label excludes dishwashing detergent. Similar-looking upholstery can require different care; follow the instructions for your own furniture.
Assess the result after the specified drying step
Complete the drying method for the affected item before judging the result or covering it again. Compare the same area with your first photograph in similar light. Record whether the original brown patch remains, a wider edge is visible, or the surface looks or feels different.
A larger outline after cleaning is an observation to pass on, not proof that the coffee has gone or that another dose is needed. Keep track of the original spill boundary and the area you treated. Avoid changing the light, adding a photo filter or taking only an extreme close-up that hides the surrounding panel.
If you are considering another treatment, check whether the exact method permits repeating it and whether the fabric has changed. Do not build a sequence from unrelated online tips. The named cleaner, its instructions and the furniture care information should remain the same reference point.

Send a useful coffee-stain enquiry
Ask for fabric-specific help if you cannot identify the label, the spill extends into the cushion interior, or the permitted method has left a mark you do not know how to address. Choose somebody who can assess the identified upholstery and explain what their proposed work involves.
Send a small, organised set: one photo showing the cushion or arm, one showing the mark and its surrounding edge, and one readable photo of the care label. Add the drink details, approximate timing and everything already applied. Keep the original image files; a screenshot of a cropped photo may omit useful detail.
Ask which piece needs attention, whether the proposed work is a local treatment or a wider panel clean, how the furniture will be dried, and what visible change may remain. Ask for the scope and any access requirements before booking. A clear assessment is more useful than a promise based only on the stain’s colour.
Make the next coffee break easier to manage
Save the sofa and cover instructions with the order details, and keep a clean absorbent cloth somewhere easy to reach. Give the mug a steady resting place beside the seat rather than balancing it on an upholstered arm.
When choosing an added cover, compare the area and overhang you need, the number of separate pieces and the care instructions actually supplied for that option. A loose layer can change the visible look of the lounge, but it does not remove coffee from the sofa underneath or establish that the filling is dry.
Keep the new cover’s care label with the sofa record. If you later change the cover, update that record rather than carrying over the previous piece’s washing instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use washing-up liquid on a coffee stain?
Only where the exact fabric permits it. Sunbrella lists it for coffee, while Warwick’s Care Label 3 prohibits dishwashing detergent. Neither establishes the treatment for another fabric. Sunbrella Warwick Fabrics
Does milk or plant milk mean I need a stronger cleaner?
Do not make that jump. Record the drink and additions, then check the approved treatment for the fabric. The sources here do not establish one milk-coffee mixture suitable for every couch.
Can the stained zip cover go in the washing machine?
Consult the furniture maker: Sunbrella notes that casing construction varies. Separate loose covers follow their own labels. Sunbrella
Will an old coffee stain definitely come out?
That cannot be established from a photo or its age alone. Tell the cleaner what you know about the fabric, the original drink and previous treatment, and ask what result can reasonably be assessed for that piece.
