Sofa care · Cushion zips
A cushion zip that stops halfway can turn a simple cover change into a frustrating job. Before reaching for pliers, look at what is stopping it. A fold of cloth caught beside the slider needs a different response from a taut casing, damaged stitching or a closure you have never opened before.
Start with the place where it stops
Keep the cushion unloaded. If it is a loose cushion designed to be lifted out, put it on a clean, flat surface with the zip visible. Leave an attached cushion in place rather than undoing furniture fittings to reach its fastener. Good light helps you see a fold beside the slider without poking into the opening.
The slider is the small moving part; the pull tab is the piece you hold. The fabric strips beside the chain are the zip tapes. Those names help when describing the problem to a repairer. YKK
| Observation | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| Cloth or lining enters the slider | Is the caught fold visible and accessible without pulling a seam apart? |
| Both sides pull away from each other | Check the cushion position, casing identity and any recent washing or insert change. |
| A gap, broken section or loose stitching | Photograph the chain, zip tape and nearby seam for assessment. |
| No familiar pull tab | Check the model instructions before treating the closure as broken. |
On a phone, swipe the table to see both columns.

Check what the zip is there for
Find the sofa model, care label and any cover-removal instructions. Keep three questions separate: may this casing be opened, may it be removed, and how may it be cleaned? A visible zip answers none of them by itself.
La-Z-Boy's published Code W guidance says its cushion covers should not be removed and laundered; its Code S guidance also restricts removal for dry cleaning. Those are that manufacturer's directions, rather than universal rules for every sofa. They show why the actual model's care instructions matter. La-Z-Boy
A missing tab also needs identification. IKEA explains that it deliberately omits handles on some children's products and mattresses. That example does not identify the closure on your lounge; ask its maker whether an unfamiliar or tabless fastener is intended for customer use. IKEA
If the instructions are missing, send the seller a photograph of the label and closure. Leave any proposed opening tool out of the process until the correct method is confirmed.

If a fold of cloth is caught in the slider
YKK advises gentle reverse movement to loosen cloth caught in a slider, without forcing it. YKK
If the furniture maker allows opening, the casing is relaxed and the fold is clearly accessible, try a small reverse movement with the normal pull tab while gently easing the cloth clear by hand. Stop if either part resists. YKK
Keep the work visible. A catch hidden inside the cushion is a reason to ask for help, rather than fish around with a sharp tool. Leave a loose yarn intact instead of treating it as a movable fold. Do not cut trapped fabric or filling to clear a path.
After a fold releases, check the area before continuing. If the same point catches again, preserve its current position and photograph it for the supplier. Repeating the movement harder will not tell you which part needs attention.
If the casing is pulling tight
Think back to what changed just before the zip became difficult. Was the casing washed, moved to another cushion, refitted at a different angle or put over a new insert? Record that sequence before deciding that the slider itself has failed.
Check any existing piece labels and compare the seams with the cushion's shape. A left-hand shaped cushion and a middle seat may look similar from above. If you are unsure which casing belongs where, use the maker's fitting diagram or ask them to identify the pieces from photographs.
Keep an unloaded cushion supported while checking its position. If the edges still will not meet as the fitting instructions describe, stop and send photographs to the maker. Ask them to check the casing and insert together before another attempt.
If the change followed washing, our guide to a sofa cover that feels smaller after washing helps separate fit changes from fastening trouble. Avoid stretching, reheating or removing filling simply to make the zip close.
If it opens behind the slider or jams again
A slider that moves while leaving an open gap is a different observation from a slider caught on cloth. So is a zip that stops repeatedly at the same visibly damaged section. Write down what happens; a photograph alone may not show the sequence.
Look at the stitching beside the zip as well as the chain. A repairer needs to know whether the opening is between the two zip halves, between the zip tape and casing, or in the surrounding upholstery. Leave loose threads intact and avoid pulling the gap wider for a better view. YKK's usage manual warns that trimming the woven zip tape can lead to tearing; leave that fabric strip intact too. YKK
Keep pliers, glue and household lubricants out of an unidentified repair. A generic tip to squeeze a slider or rub something along the chain does not establish compatibility with your fastener, fabric or finish. Ask the furniture maker or repairer about any proposed product or tool before applying it.
For a new cushion or a fault you have only just noticed, contact the seller before altering the closure. Include when you first noticed it and what you have already tried, without assuming the cause.
Make a repair enquiry easy to assess
Send a small set of clear photographs rather than one extreme close-up:
- The whole cushion: show its shape and where it belongs on the sofa.
- The stopping point: include the slider, chain and nearby stitching in the same frame.
- The product information: photograph the model and care labels, plus any markings visible on the fastener.
Use the original images without filters. If a scale helps, place a ruler beside the area without pressing it into the fabric or opening. Add a short note: “Right seat cushion; zip stops near the back corner after the cover was refitted; no tools used.” Describe only what you know.
Ask whether the repairer needs the whole cushion, just the casing or an on-site inspection. Confirm the proposed work: assessment of caught material, a slider repair, replacement of the complete zip, or repair to the surrounding seam. A matching appearance and an operating fastener are separate things to discuss.

Record the casing before ordering a replacement
If replacement is recommended, start with the sofa make, model and affected piece. Include the position of the zip, piping, shaped corners and any fabric direction or pattern. Ask the supplier which measurements they need and how to take them; a seat width alone is not a casing specification.
For a custom enquiry, record the requested length, width and thickness separately, identify what you measured, and label the photographs to match. Do not take an old stretched cover or a compressed insert as an unquestioned sizing template. Let the repairer explain which reference they need.
Ask whether the quote includes removing the old zip, fitting its replacement and checking the surrounding seams. Confirm what happens if the existing fabric cannot support the proposed work. Our reupholstery decision guide is useful if the assessment reveals a wider upholstery problem.

Choose a decorative cover after the fastening is sorted
Once the existing cushion and fastening have been assessed, you can decide whether you also want a new visible layer. A loose throw sits over the furniture; it does not replace the shaped casing around an insert or mend its zip.
Choose the amount of seat, back and arm coverage you want, then compare the product's listed dimensions with your lounge. Our throw versus fitted-cover guide explains the difference in finish and fitting. Keep any original cushion-care instructions with the new cover's label, so each layer has its own care plan.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a paperclip when the zip has no pull tab?
First check why the tab is absent. It may be an intentional design, a broken part or an unfamiliar closure. Use only the opening method confirmed for that exact product; a method shown for another cushion or mattress is not enough to identify yours.
Should I wash the casing to loosen a stiff zip?
No washing method should be chosen from a zip problem. Read the casing's care instructions first, and have the fastener assessed while its current condition is visible. A removable casing may still need professional cleaning.
Does a stuck zip mean the whole sofa needs replacing?
The observation alone does not tell you that. Ask which part needs work and whether the surrounding fabric is sound enough for it. The useful first decision is the scope of the cushion repair, rather than the fate of the whole lounge.
Can I leave the zip open under a sofa throw?
Ask the maker or repairer whether the cushion is suitable to use in that condition. A throw hides the area but does not keep the insert correctly enclosed or establish that the damaged casing is ready for use.
