How to Choose the Right Insert for a Decorative Cushion Cover

Cushion covers · Insert sizing

You have found a cushion cover that works with the lounge, but the insert choices do not line up neatly with its size. Should the inner match the cover, or be larger? Start with the exact cover and its maker’s guidance, then compare the proposed insert. A general size-up tip is not enough to settle every pairing.

First, separate a decorative cushion from a sofa seat piece

For this guide, a decorative cushion is the smaller cushion you lean against or arrange on the lounge. Its removable outer cover and its filled inner are separate items. A flat cover piece laid across a sofa seat is another product again, even when a listing uses the word “cushion”.

Before comparing sizes, read the selected option and what the pack contains. Are you buying a cover only, an insert only or a filled cushion? A styled photo can include several pieces, and an image of a plump cushion does not establish that filling is supplied.

If you are replacing the foam inside a seat cushion, use the furniture maker’s specification or an upholstery supplier. A decorative-cushion insert guide does not specify a replacement seat core.

Use the maker’s recommendation before a sizing shortcut

There is no single “always add 5 cm” rule to apply to every cushion cover. Check the recommendation for the cover and the proposed insert. Two current examples show why:

IKEA Australia, GURLI 50 × 50 cm Fits a 50 × 50 cm inner cushion, sold separately. IKEA Australia
Innergreen recycled PET insert page 45 × 45 cm example Recommends a 50 × 50 cm insert for its stated plump-looking result. Innergreen

On a phone, swipe the table to see every column.

Neither example determines the insert for a different cover. If you are mixing suppliers, send the cover details to the insert seller and ask about that pairing. Describe whether you want a relaxed profile or a fuller appearance, rather than giving a size alone.

Two maker-specific examples compare a 50 by 50 centimetre GURLI cover with a 50 by 50 inner, and Innergreen’s 45 by 45 cover example with a 50 by 50 recycled PET insert.

Make a two-dimension record of the empty cover

Put the empty cover on a clean, flat surface and let it lie naturally. Record its labelled size, then measure width and height without stretching it to reach a number. Photograph the tape position so a seller can see what you measured.

If the cover has a flange, piping or decorative border, ask whether its listed dimensions describe the outer edge or the space intended for the insert. Record both only where you can identify them clearly; do not guess a hidden seam or cut an opening to find it.

Keep centimetres and millimetres labelled, and retain both dimensions when comparing options. A retailer’s general chart is useful for browsing, but Pillow Talk’s own guide directs shoppers to the individual product details for exact dimensions. Pillow Talk Australia

Keep the shape in the comparison

A square, a rectangle and a shaped cushion need different information. For a rectangle, write width and height in the same orientation as the listing. Do not choose from the longer dimension alone. For a round cover, confirm how the seller states its size. For a boxed, gusseted or bolster design, ask what depth or other shape measurements the insert requires.

Decorative edges can make a cover look larger without telling you the intended fill shape. Include a front photo, a side photo and the closure in your enquiry. If the seller offers custom inserts, use its measurement instructions before ordering; a square-size recommendation is not a specification for a three-dimensional shape.

Square, rectangular and irregularly shaped cushion drawings highlight different shape checks.

Compare the insert as carefully as the cover

Once you have a proposed size, check the insert’s full description: shape, filling, casing, stated dimensions and care. Decide how the cushion will be used. Is it mainly an accent on the lounge, or something you regularly lean against? Tell the supplier what matters to you about its feel and profile.

Do not treat the filling name as a complete fit or comfort specification. Ask whether the seller’s recommended size assumes a particular insert from its range. If you can inspect the proposed combination before buying, look at the corners, side profile and closure as well as the front.

For the decorative arrangement once sizing is settled, see our guide to matching sofa cushions with your interior.

Check the fit without making the zip do the work

Follow the cover maker’s filling instructions. Work gently and pause if the insert will not pass through the opening without force. The zip should close the cover; do not use it to drag an oversized or badly positioned insert into place.

After filling, inspect the cushion from the front and side. Check whether the insert reaches the intended corners, whether the shape suits the cover and whether the closure and seams sit comfortably. These observations help explain a problem to the supplier; they do not prove that buying the next size up will solve it.

If the zip catches, stop and check what is in its path. Our stuck cushion zip guide covers that separate problem. Do not cut filling or alter a new cover to make an uncertain pairing fit.

Check the pillow-cover option among sofa-cover sizes

Some Sofa Decor listings offer decorative pillow-cover options alongside much larger sofa-cover pieces. Choose the option by its wording, not just the product title or a full-room photograph.

The Marlow Chenille Sofa Seat Cover is one listing to inspect when coordinating a smaller cushion cover with sofa-seat coverage. Its current Specification selector includes a separate Pillow Cover-45x45cm option alongside the larger panels. Confirm what that option supplies and whether its dimensions include the border before choosing an insert. The availability of a pillow-cover option does not establish which insert size or filling will suit it.

For a mixed order, keep decorative cushion covers on a separate line from seat, arm or back pieces. Our sofa-cover piece-planning guide helps organise the larger coverage areas.

Keep the care instructions for both parts

A removable cover does not tell you how to clean the insert inside it. For example, Adairs currently gives its 45 × 45 cm polyester cushion insert a dry-clean-only instruction. That is the instruction for that insert, not a rule for every insert or a Sofa Decor cover. Read and retain the labels for each component. Adairs

Before checkout, keep a short record: exact cover option, width and height, shape, proposed insert, intended appearance and each item’s care. If one point is missing, send a specific question:

I have [cover and exact option], labelled [dimensions]. I measured [dimensions and method]. Would [proposed insert and size] suit it for a [relaxed/full] appearance? Please confirm the fit, what is included and the care for each item.

A four-part enquiry record lists cover identity, the proposed insert, closure fit and separate care instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Should a cushion insert always be larger than the cover?

No universal allowance applies to every pairing. The named IKEA and Innergreen examples above use different sizing guidance. Use the recommendation for your cover and proposed insert, then ask the supplier if you are combining products from different ranges.

Can I choose a rectangular insert using only its longest side?

Record both dimensions in the same orientation as the listing. For a shaped or gusseted cover, ask which additional measurements are required. An ordinary square-cushion recommendation does not establish the fit of that different shape.

Does a pillow-cover option include an insert?

Check the contents for the exact selected option. A filled cushion in a photograph or a pillow-cover choice in a sofa-cover listing does not establish what comes in the pack. Ask the seller if the inclusion is not stated.
