Before you buy · Opacity and show-through
A cream cover looks right for your lounge, but your existing sofa is charcoal, brown or navy. Will the original colour disappear underneath, or leave the new fabric looking grey? Before choosing a pale shade, check what evidence the seller has for that exact fabric over a dark background.
First, separate show-through from exposed upholstery
“Hide the dark sofa” can mean different things. Name the result you want before comparing covers:
- Through the fabric: you can make out the underlying colour or pattern beneath a covered area.
- Around the fabric: dark upholstery remains visible at the arms, sides, cushion joins or lower front.
- On the surface: the cover itself has highlights, shadows or a change in appearance from another angle.
A more opaque fabric would not solve a bare side panel. More pieces would not establish whether the fabric conceals what sits beneath it. Photograph your sofa and mark which areas must look light, including the parts visible from the doorway.
If the concern is a shifting patch on a textured surface, our pile-shading guide covers that separate observation.

A colour name or weight label cannot answer it
A pale colour name does not establish opacity. Datacolor distinguishes light blocking from background visibility and notes that fabrics of similar colour and weight can have different opacity. Datacolor
A fabric-family label is not enough either. The Slipcover Maker cautions that some 12 oz and 14 oz natural denims still reveal dark or strongly patterned upholstery. That is a denim-specific example, not a specification for a Sofa Decor cover. The Slipcover Maker
Use texture and weight to ask better questions rather than to declare a winner. Our GSM guide explains what a fabric-weight figure measures.

Ask what is underneath the fabric in the photo
A room photo may not identify the original upholstery. A folded stack puts several layers together. Ask for the exact colour in one layer over a comparable dark background, with any extra material identified.
Request a close view and a wider view to distinguish the surface from its placement. Record what the seller confirms and what remains unknown. This enquiry applies the inspection principle below.

If you can inspect the exact fabric, use your sofa
LinenBeauty recommends checking linen fabric against the original upholstery in daylight and artificial light. This is linen-specific guidance, not evidence for faux fur. LinenBeauty
If you already have access to the exact item, follow its handling instructions. Keep it dry and unaltered; observe one layer on your sofa under your usual lighting. Record any visible colour or pattern and take unfiltered reference photos. This observation is not an opacity measurement. If inspection is unavailable, leave the result unconfirmed.

Check it in the arrangement you will actually use
For a stretch cover, ask about its intended fit range. Stretch can affect sheerness by opening yarn spacing, so a relaxed fabric image is incomplete evidence for a fitted arrangement. Datacolor
For a loose piece, inspect the single-layer areas, not just a folded hem. Plan where edges will land and where the original sofa will remain exposed. A dark strip between separate pieces is a placement question, even if you cannot see the upholstery through the covered areas.
Use your own measurements and the selected option’s dimensions. Our piece-planning guide helps record seats, backs and arms; it does not provide an opacity rating.
Do not assume an extra layer is a simple fix
If a pale cover appears too sheer, it is tempting to put a sheet or throw underneath. Treat that as a new arrangement to confirm with the cover supplier and sofa maker, rather than part of the original product specification.
Ask whether the proposed combination is suitable, how it should be fitted and which care instructions apply to each item. Check the complete arrangement before deciding it solves the problem. Do not buy an unsuitable size on the assumption that stretching, folding or adding material will create the finish you want.
If concealment is essential, resolve it before choosing the cover. A different shade still needs its own evidence.
Considering Aurelia in Cream? Keep opacity as an open question
The Sofa Decor Aurelia Faux Fur Sofa Seat Cover currently lists Cream and Dark Gray. Its description identifies a rounded, raised faux fur surface and separate options for seats, backs, arms and a chaise.
Those details help you compare colour, texture and format. They do not establish whether Cream hides dark upholstery. The fresh product record supplies no tested opacity result or confirmed lining specification. Ask about that exact option and your original sofa colour before treating it as a complete colour change.
Make the unanswered question clear before checkout
Keep the product link, exact colour and selected dimensions with a photo of your sofa. State whether you want the original colour concealed across the whole lounge or only the covered seating areas.
I am considering [product, colour and option] over a [dark colour, plain/patterned] sofa. Do you have evidence of this exact fabric in one layer over a similar background? Was any extra layer used? Please also confirm which areas my selected pieces would cover.
Save the answer with your order details. If concealment remains unconfirmed, decide whether you are comfortable with that uncertainty before buying.

Frequently asked questions
Will every cream sofa cover hide a dark brown sofa?
Cream is a colour description. Ask whether the exact fabric has been assessed over dark upholstery; its name alone cannot establish concealment.
Does a thick-looking or textured cover guarantee no show-through?
No. A surface close-up does not establish what will be visible beneath one layer. Ask for evidence of the selected fabric over dark upholstery.
Why can I still see dark areas around a light cover?
Check whether the upholstery is uncovered at a side, edge or join. That is a coverage question. Record the area and compare your planned pieces with their exact dimensions.
