Care & Maintenance Guide – Keep Your Sofa Cover Looking Beautiful
A good care routine starts with the instructions for your exact cover. Keep its label and product details handy before washing, treating a mark or changing how you dry it.
Check which layer you are cleaning. An added sofa cover, the sofa’s original upholstery and its cushion filling can need different care. A zip does not, by itself, mean an upholstery cover can be removed and washed.
First, check what the label allows
Match the care label to the item you bought, including any separate pieces. Check washing, drying, ironing and cleaning restrictions together. A machine-wash instruction does not automatically permit tumble drying.
On standard care labels, a number inside the wash tub is the maximum washing temperature; bars beneath it call for a gentler process. Drying instructions may specify a line, a flat surface or shade. Use the GINETEX care-symbol guide to read the symbols on your own label.
If the label is missing, unclear or conflicts with the product page, ask for clarification before wet cleaning. Descriptions such as chenille, plush, stretch or water resistant do not establish a washing method for every product with that description.
Keep everyday care gentle
Check the seats, arms and edges for loose crumbs, hair and snags. Where the item’s instructions permit vacuuming, use low suction and a soft upholstery attachment without dragging it across the fabric.
Look at how the cover sits after use. Smooth and reposition it according to its fitting instructions, without forcing seams or pulling it tight around unsuitable shapes. Use only the fixings supplied or recommended for that product. Check the measuring guide if the size or coverage seems wrong.

Plan the wash and the drying space
- Confirm that washing is allowed. Check the specified process, detergent restrictions and whether pieces need separate treatment. Do not copy the settings from another cover.
- Check preparation instructions. Follow directions for any zips, ties, removable accessories or backing. Check that the item can be washed within your machine’s load instructions; do not force an oversized cover into the drum.
- Prepare the permitted drying method. Allow enough space for the whole item, whether its instructions call for flat drying or hanging. Tumble drying, ironing and direct heat each need their own permission.
- Let it dry before refitting. Check thicker hems, seams and any backing as well as the main fabric. Follow any product-specific shaping instructions, and allow the cover to dry completely before putting it back into use.
Drying can take longer than expected on a cool or damp day. Plan ahead so you are not relying on an unapproved heat setting to get the lounge ready. For original upholstery, follow the furniture maker’s instructions rather than the instructions for an added cover.
What to do when something spills
Attend to a spill promptly. Gently absorb surface liquid with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth rather than scrubbing. Check both the cover and the upholstery beneath it. Do not add water, a stain remover or a homemade mixture until you have confirmed it is suitable for that exact material.
Follow the approved cleaner’s directions, including any concealed-area test, and avoid soaking the fabric or filling. A water-resistance description is not a reason to leave a spill sitting on the cover.
